Build My Own Website For An Online Business? Here Is the Formula
Many people are drawn to the internet for making money. Why? Because you hear about stories all the time of people opening website businesses up and online business up and making a lot of money.
Well, it’s partially true. It is not “easy”, it takes some time, but compared to a regular store front it definitely takes a lot less money. For someone willing to work hard, online business is a great way to earn income. However, to do so, you need to know some rules and tips.
To be successful you need a product or service that people actually want; either your own or someone else’s. This is a big key. And with web user psychology, you have to think about if it is worth their time to buy your product or whether they can find it elsewhere for free. People will pay for quality content and for convenience. Instead of having to waste time searching and compiling the info they may just decide your product will work best or them.
Before you start building your web site, research to discover what people are looking for and what they really want.
• Brainstorm ideas part 1: Think about what you yourself shop for
• Brainstorm ideas part 2: Think about what the world at large shops for. Alexa.com is a great site for hot topics and hot products
• Do your keyword research so you know what search phrases to target. Google’s keyword tool is excellent for this.
• Check out the competition part 1: Check out the competition for that certain product. It needs to be enough to know it’s a good market, but not overwhelming that your website may get lost.
• Check out the competitino part 2: Determine SEO efforts: even if there are a lot of competing websites, you just need to get onto the first page of Google. So figure out the SEO efforts you may need to put forth to do that.
• Check out the competition part 3: Determine your sales point and if you want to have affiliates. Having a strong sales page and strong sales means you can attract affiliates to sell your product for you.
Here are your steps:
• Decide on a niche that you’re interested in and that there’s a demand for, one that doesn’t have a too much competition but enough to know people are spending money in this market.
• Produce a lot of quality content for your website. It not only has to be good quality but also SEO optimized for your keyword phrases.
• Build web pages full of useful, original content and turn your site into an authority in its niche.
• Build backlinks to your site to get more traffic.
Then keep repeating those last steps. Continue to produce great content. Continue to build backlinks to your site.
Once you have a great website and traffic coming in, you have some credibility and from there it is a matter of offering a product for sale. Do not tie yourself to one product, but add several different monetizations to your site.
For example you can offer:
• Your own products
• Other people’s products
• Your own coaching services
• Advertising such as GoogleAdsense
Sure it sounds easy, but the key to succeeding is perseverance and commitment. This is something you definitely need to treat as your own business. You need to work on it every day. You cannot expect everyone to buy. It is a numbers game so you need to get a lot of traffic and then from there get people to want to come back to your site. From there, it’s a matter of having great sales copy to increase your conversions of traffic to sales.
Success depends on doing each of these steps well. If you’re motivated and you work on it every day, your website will become a great online business for you to make money online. So you want to build my own website for an online business? Yes it is possible. Go for it!
Your Questions About Web Design

Jenny asks…
web design?
Hi, I’m want to learn web design but dont have the money to do a course right now. What web site can i go onto to start learning how to design web sites? What would be the best course to learn web design?
Many Thanks
Hatty

webdesignerscotty answers:
Go to: http://www.how-to-build-websites.com/
Use the navigation at left to view lessons.
I would recommend getting an HTML editor, if you don’t already have one, so you don’t have to do the coding yourself.

David asks…
web design?
I would like to know where i can find a good and cost effective web design company to design my business website? thank you.

webdesignerscotty answers:
You can try using a site like Elance.com. You just post the project (describe what you need) and then web designers can “bid” to win your project. The prices are competitive since they want to get the project instead of the other designers.
No matter who you hire, be sure to look carefully over their portfolio and reviews (in this case, both are available on Elance).

Joseph asks…
web design???
I want to get into web design…I’m a fantastic artist and I’m great in the technical field as well. I can’t afford to go back to school right now, but is there anything else I could do to break out into the industry? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

webdesignerscotty answers:
Goto www.elance.com, there are all kinds of freelance projects up for bid, try a small project, see how it goes. If you start doing work people like, via a site like that, you’ll start getting more business.
Getafreelancer.com is good too.
Craigslist is good too.

Chris asks…
What are the differences between web design and graphic design and which career should I choose?
I am currently a junior in high school (also taking classes at the local college to get ahead) and want to have a career in some sort of computer based designing, but I can’t choose. The two I’m mainly considering are web design and graphic design. I personally would prefer being in graphic design, but I hear that the income isn’t that great, and I’m not that creative or decisive, so I’m leaning towards web design. I’m just not that sure, though.
I’m trying to find out class and skill requirements, annual salary, and maybe more details about each career. Also personal input would be great, too!

webdesignerscotty answers:
web design is pretty much what it sounds like- it’s designing for the internet, whether it’s creating websites or working in programs like Flash. Also, you do have to be some what creative when designing websites, but I know some web design majors who prefer the coding part rather than the design part.
Graphic design is designing mostly for print, with some designing for the web (ex: banner ads). In graphic design you can do numerous things like working on layouts for magazines, creating logos or designing packaging for consumer goods.
As far as income goes, it all depends on where you live, how much experience you have and what your job title is. A junior designer obviously won’t be making as much as a senior designer or an art director. You’ll just have to do some of your own research to figure out how much a graphic designer makes versus a web designer.
I will tell you from personal experience that there does seem to be a lot more web design jobs out there. I majored in graphic design and although I enjoy what I do, its been really tough finding a full-time job, but hopefully the economy will get better soon!

Sharon asks…
How can I become a web design teacher in a community college?
I want to teach web design in a local community college. So far I have my associated degree. I am also in the web design business and have been for years. What do I need to do to become a web design teacher?

webdesignerscotty answers:
You will need your master’s degree to teach at a community college. It might be good to try to land a tutoring job at a community college while you work on completing your education. This way by the time you are certified to teach at this level, you already have some experience working with college level students and you may have your foot in the door.
Good luck.

Paul asks…
How hard is it to break into the web design industry?
From the time I was eleven I’ve been into designing websites. Now I’m eighteen years old and looking into pursing web design as a career.I’m not stupid,I know that what I know about web design now isn’t nearly enough to get a job with.I’m planning on either going to college or taking a course on web design, but before I can make this kind of choice I need to know:
Is it difficult to break into the web design industry, even with proof of college or college level education and a portfolio?

webdesignerscotty answers:
Not hard
Start by learning HTML
http://www.w3schools.com/html/DEFAULT.asp
then go to java, flash, php, peral, CGI-bin, and all others lol

Richard asks…
What web design software can I use that is compatible with both mac and windows?
I am new web design, I am using smart space by Go Daddy but really don’t like it. I would love to find the right web design software (studio) to use and then just upload to Go Daddy with a FTP client. Please help? Thank you very much.

webdesignerscotty answers:
Aptana Studio is very good, free version contains almost everything you need for writing a good website.

Mark asks…
What web design platform or software can I use to design websites like iGoogle or My Yahoo?
What web design platform or software can I use to design websites like iGoogle or My Yahoo i.e. websites (e.g.homepage) that can be modular in design and blocks can be moved around or replaced by the user? The user has a choice of modules to add to homepage and decides what to add or remove on their web page?

webdesignerscotty answers:
It is a real hard thing to say being those examples are fully developed applications for the most part. To build the base yourself you would have to look into a web development language like Ruby, PHP, ASP, or etc. I would recommend PHP or Ruby for the open source community behind them. Then using a framework and MVC pattern to structure your code and make things easier. (i.e. Rails or Zend)
Now their are a few open source platforms created already you can install, but none offer the complete solution really. If you want basic functionality and something easy to use I would look into the PHP solution of WordPress, Drupal, or CMS Made Simple. You can customize these to do what you want with less code and maybe some prebuilt plugins but they will not be as clean or nice as building your own.
Then lastly when it comes down to designing your modules and pages you should look at just using your typical design software from Adobe or the open source programs GIMP or so forth. Just plan out what you want your application to do before you being and keep that in mind while actually designing the modules. If you lose sight of the end scope you could box yourself in with a design that does not function modularly.
Sorry for possibly stating things that were not needed but I wanted to cover most bases in case the information was not known.
EDIT: I forgot to add the information about the Front-End Interface. Both those sites use what is called AJAX, which is basically using JavaScript to reload and send data to code in the back end to return results to the front page so that the user never has to leave his current page, if you google this you will find many resources and there are even a couple frameworks for this like JQuery and MooTools.

Internet Marketing 101: Get Traffic To Your Website
What good is a website if it does not get any traffic? Did you know some of the websites that earn the most money actually look a bit crappy? Why is this? Because internet marketing is the key. You need traffic, and from there it’s a numbers game. This article is a brief overview of internet marketing.
When I first got into designing websites, I was pretty proud of myself for putting together very nifty websites. Then I learned more about web usability and web psychology and it knocked me over. (For more info on that, check “Web Pages That Suck“). But then my clients started getting upset because they would say they would Google even their own names and nothing would come up.
The solution?
Internet marketing and SEO.
That is when I started becoming a student of internet marketing.
These days, I do not spend as much time with website design. In fact many of my sites are build on WordPress. Instead, I build very functional sites and spend the rest of my time on marketing.
That being said, there are so many internet marketing possibilities for promoting an online business. Following is a simple explanation of some of the most common ?internet marketing options that you can use to promote and get traffic to your website, blog, and online business.
Article Marketing
This is the most conmon way and is a convenient way, especially for bloggers or any other website that produces articles and blog posts on a regular basis. What you do is take that blog post or article and then submit it to an article directory. In the author resource box of that article, you then put a link back to your website. This works great because when people read your article, they can then see the link to your website. This works even better because search engines will also see links to your website and rank you higher.
The more article directories you submit to, the better. Just to get you started, three of the best are: ezinearticles.com, buzzle.com, and goarticles.com
Forum Marketing
There are likely many forums out there related to your online business. So why not be a contributing member? Most forums let you put a link to your website in your signature and in your forum profile. So you get backlinks to your site right away. But in addition with your thoughtful posts, people are more likely to visit your website.
Directory Listings
Directories are a lot like search engines, only listings in the directories are managed and ranked by people rather than by automated, electronic means. Many directories ?accept directory listings free of charge, so they can be an inexpensive and effective form of internet marketing. For search engines, you also are able to get additional backlinks but submitting your site to a directory. Dmoz.org is the most popular.
Email Marketing
Email marketing is a must for just about any business. Why? Because then you have access to your website visitors to come back. If, for example, the search engines change their algorithms and you no longer appear on the front page, you have your mailing list to write to. Think about it as repeat traffic. What you do is when someone visits your website, get them to send you their email address. You then put them on your mailing list. Most often you want to offer an incentive such as a free report or ebook for joining your mailing list. From there, you need to make sure your mailing list provides a valuable service with great content and also plugs for helpful products.
Ezine Advertising
Ezine advertising, as an internet marketing option, is a lot like advertising in a magazine; only the “magazine” is delivered to subscribers electronically rather than through the mail. By placing an ad in an Ezine, many readers will become aware of your website.
Pay-Per-Click Search Engine Marketing
Pay-per-click search engine marketing is one of the most successful forms of internet marketing. Basically, pay-per-click search engine advertising is a process whereby you bid on ?specific keywords that will direct targeted traffic to your website. Google Adwords is the most popular Pay-Per-Click marketing resource. Have you ever searched for something in Google and saw ads appear? Those are Google Adwords ads. You target specific keywords and then you tell Google how much you can afford to pay. They will figure out where and when to place your ads. You do NOT pay until someone clicks on your ads.
Social Bookmarking
In the old days, people bookmarked websites they liked in their browsers. Then came the idea of “Social bookmarking”. These are websites which allow you to “bookmark online” so to speak. So you can share your bookmarks with many other people. This has now become a source for many internet marketers to add backlinks to their own websites. There are many social bookmarking sites. You should check out socialmarker.com as that is a semi-automated tool to let you post your website URL to many social bookmarking sites at once.
Those are six very tried and true ways to get traffic to your website.
So try some of these internet marketing tips. Just remember to put out consistent and constant effort and you will see your website traffic grow!

Your Questions About Blogging Tips

Lisa asks…
When you’re looking for the best blogging tips from expert bloggers, who do you turn to?
I get overwhelmed by all of the excellent info about blogging that’s available. Give me the best of the best! I’m looking to take the advice of the ones who give actionable, easily implementable ideas that work. Names and website info please. Plus, the best tip they’ve given you that really works. Thanks!

webdesignerscotty answers:
Though, you will read and be approached by many so-called experts, who tell you how they made millions out of blogging and how you too can earn that much. In addition, they tell you blogging is all play and no work. But blogging is nothing like what most people tell others. It’s a serious hard work and the chances of success, to passionate people, are more or less the same as with other real world professions.
To get you a fair idea of blogging, from earning perspective, let I share with you some facts:
Before answering to your question, I want to put a fact: majority bloggers earn nothing, a small number earn something equivalent to a cup of coffee a day, rest make either modest or big money.
So when you ask “Can someone make a living out of blogging?” then the true answer is, even if very difficult, it’s possible. One can earn a living, and one can earn big money too. But why one limit the scenario to blogging, most professions and careers present the same picture, more or less.
Now let I give a preview of the earning potential of a blog:
If your idea is to earn by showing ads from ad programs like Adsense, Kontera, Adbrite etc. Then your earnings will depend on the number of clicks you manage to get on your displayed ads. On an average, if your blog content is good, means if the content shows good context ads, and if you have 300 blog visitors then you will have 2-6 clicks on your ads. Studies show ads on websites have a click ratio of around 2 percent. Thus for every 100 visitors one can expect to get 2 clicks on ads. Or in other words, out of 100 visitors to a blog, only 2 visitors click on an ad. This translates into, 1 or 1.2 dollars a day for a 300 visitor a day blog.
If your idea is to earn revenue by selling products through affiliate links; or sell your own products/services, then again, the earnings will depend on your blog traffic. And the chances of a visitor going for a buy, is again around 2 percent.
Keeping that in mind, it is possible with perseverance and commitment
Thanks

Video blogging tips: How do you talk into a camera?
Yea when I watch videos after I make a video, it seems very mundane.
Also, it’s really hard for me to stare and look at a camera and act like I’m talking to a person. I don’t know why. Any tips?
Also, I’m not good at acting. People say I don’t have enough “feeling” when acting.
So I don’t know how to make my blog any more interesting, or how to look directly into the camera for long periods of time without feeling weird.

webdesignerscotty answers:
This may sound really silly, but it works for a lot of people. Take a paper plate and cut a hole out of the middle. This is where you will attach your video camera lens. On the paper plate draw a face. Now when you talk to the camera it will feel like you are talking to a person. You could name your new plate-person-friend something silly. That way you will smile when you look at the camera. Also, you could just put a real person’s photo there – it works just as well. Good luck.

webdesignerscotty answers:
For WordPress users…
Word Press already pings one service.
Here’s a lot more to add.
In WordPress just log in to the Admin Area,
Go to Options–> Writing, and at the bottom
you’ll see a text area under Update Services.
Paste the list below in there and click
Update Options.
After that, whenever you post to your blog
Wordpress automatically pings all the services for you.
Posting will be just a little slower due to
the amount of pings going on, but it’s worth the
wait because it’s free promotion for your blog.
You can add these websites in the list:

Blog Directories.

All are free.
When your writing a post for your blog,
treat it just like an individual web page
your trying to optimize for the search engines.
Include the keywords in the title & body of the post.
Also, you want your post to look similiar to this…
Http://webmasterautomation.com/blog/2007/01/27/reciprocal-linking/
where the keywords are included in the url.
You do this under Options–>PermaLinks.
Then choose date & name based.
Hope this helps.

Your Questions About Web Programming Languages

Laura asks…
What are the best web programming languages to learn?
I’m just starting to learn programming. I already know html, but I want to expand on that. Where should I start? PHP? ASP?

webdesignerscotty answers:
Classic ASP is not practical anymore…sites that run on it are moving away from it, and sites are not really being developed in it. ASP.NET has a solid ground, however, and is a good framework to get into.
Here’s the thing: You’ll hear people tell you that both ASP.NET and PHP suck. They will do so for varied reasons (ASP.NET suffers from being a MS product, PHP suffers from being a language that rather goes its own way…and repeats the mistakes of languages of the past)
PHP is easier to implement. It is also more popular and being open source has a lot of public support and packages and modules you can plug into your site.
Remember, HTML is NOT a programming language, and it won’t help you program (although it gets you used to the term “syntax”, that’s really about it).

Charles asks…
What programming languages can be used to implement an application onto a website? Like in a web game…?
The ones I know can be used in web applications are:
- Perl
- Java
- Others… this is what I’m looking for.
Not like HTML, CSS, XHTML, or web programming languages. And also, what .NET languages can be used to program applications viewable on a webpage?

webdesignerscotty answers:
PHP
Flash
JavaScript

Helen asks…
What is the relationship between web programming languages and others like C,C++,and Java?
I’m so interested in knowing if there is a relationship between programming languages for us to design webpages and those developed to help software makers achieve their own business-based objectives.
Is there any way php, asp, scripts, and other kind of platforms have something to do with the most commonly used programming languages such as C,C++,Java ?

webdesignerscotty answers:
The general philosophy is the same. Personally learning VB and C++ made me think of web languages as a piece of cake.
As there is a wide range of web programming languages many of them vary from interpreted (ie. Javascript) to compiled (ie. Java) and also some use Object Oriented features.

Nancy asks…
What are the most in-demand web programming languages today?
I like all of the ones I’ve experimented with so far… PHP, PERL, AJAX, SQL, ASP.NET, JAVA, etc…
But I don’t want to spread myself too thin. I want to focus on 2 (maybe 3) languages that are most in-demand, or worth the most money.
I’m still in college and I’m trying to increase my self value before I graduate
Thanks in advance

webdesignerscotty answers:
You might want to strongly consider .NET and JAVA. As a (IT services) business owner, I can attest that those qualifications are always in demand. It would be a good idea to understand SQL commands also, but potentially not as lucrative, which you listed as part of your criteria.
PHP is popular, but very easy to implement, therefore it is sometimes more competitive. But the number of sites using PHP and MySQL continue to increase as well.
Good luck.

Paul asks…
What are the best web programming languages to learn if i want to do free lance web programming?
I’m particularly concerned with developing well functioning visually attractive websites.

webdesignerscotty answers:
Visually attractive is done using graphics so you need to become a graphical artist first.
As for programming, well HTML (which is technically a formatting language) comes first. Then Javascript or VBScript. Javascript is more widely used.
Server side processing depends on the server you are using but perl is very popular.
PHP is a complete web processing language which includes server side processing.
ASP is similar but not used as much as PHP.
To display your graphics you may want to learn about flash programming.
Java can also be used for web design and programming. With java you need to learn JSP.
Then once you have created your web page you may need data to make the page more dynamic.
This is done using SQL on a relational database like MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server.
Learn all that and you may be able to call yourself a professional web designer.
Have fun.

Helen asks…
How do I edit web design templates to make it look how I want it to look?
I am working on a web site for a client and I will be working with a web template I downloaded for the first time. are there any tutorials or web site helpers that can help me figure out how to edit the web template to look how i would desire it to look. or if you have advise on how to edit the template and put my own images and text to it could you please help!

webdesignerscotty answers:
You need an HTML editor or you can use notepad if you know html.
If not, look for a “WYSIWYG” editor. They will help you edit the pages graphically.
Also, you will need photoshop or GIMP to edit images. Just play around with it till you end up with something you like. Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS though are what you’d need for editing templates.

Daniel asks…
Opening a web design studio or a web templates site?
What do you think would be easier to sell web design… by opening a web design studio (if a client comes start the design from zero) or by creating a templates site where if the clients like any design they can just download it at a price?

webdesignerscotty answers:
Hi, I think both ideas are great
With your studio you are acting as a contractor and getting your clients. With a shop, you just make the templates and put them out for people to download (you still have to do some internet marketing to get people there). The best way is to make some of your templates FREE and in your template put a link back to your site. That way if they use it, you get backlinks to your site.

My Tips To Help You Choose A Web Design Professional
Creating your web site can be a tricky process. It is getting easier and easier today with more software available to you. However, for many people they would rather do what they do best whether it’s being a dentist, a photographer, or a businessman.
For that reason it seem to still be cost effective for these folks to choose a web design company. Unless you run a web-based business, you probably do not have web design experience within your company. Building your web site will take time and a little homework!
To create a web site for your business, follow these steps:
- Establish your goals
- Determine your budget
- Pick a web design company (and usually with this a web hosting company)
Establish Your Goals
Before you begin looking for company to help you design and build your web site, take the time to understand the goals of your web site. This will be extremely important to help set expectations with the web design company you choose. Web user psychology is very important when taking into account what you want your site to do. Is the goal for users to buy? To subscribe? Or …?
In order to set your web site goals, ask yourself the following questions:
- Why do you want a web site?
- What do you want your users to do when they get to your website?
- Who is your target demographic?
- What is your industry?
- Who are your competitors?
- Do they already have web sites? If so, what do they look like?
- How soon do you want your web site?
- What happens if you never create a web site for your business?
Take the time to answer each of the above questions and if you have time, write the answers down on a sheet of paper. These are the same questions most web design companies will ask you before they begin to create your site. If you have these questions answered up front, you will have some criteria for choosing the right web design company.
Determine Your Budget
How much do you want to spend on your web site. web sites can cost you anywhere from $100 to $100,000 depending upon what you want it to do. Know your spending constraints before you begin negotiating with design companies.
Check Out web design Companies: Review their Portfolios
A well established web design company will have a solid portfolio of web sites that they have created for other clients. Ask for links to other site the design company has created and review each one. Do you like what you see? Do the sites have a style that appeals to you? In addition to reviewing web sites, ask for customer references. And remember, what you see and personally like MAY NOT be what is right for users coming to your site. This has to be figured out in the section above as far as what you plan to do with the website.
Comparison Shop
Pricing for creating a web site can vary. Typically, web design companies will charge one of three ways:
- Time and materials: price is variable based on the actual number of hours spent working on your site.
- Fixed Price: some design companies will charge you a fixed fee based on a fixed set of requirements.
- A La Cart Pricing: some design companies will charge “by the page” or “by function”. This can allow you as the web master to have some flexibility within your budget.
Lastly, get everything in writing.
And do not finalize the deal until you understand all of the costs up front. Also make sure that you understand what “done” means.
As an incentive for both parties, and to split the risk amongst both the designer and yourself, structure partial payments at certain milestones.
There are thousands of web designers across the country and they should all fight feverously for your business! If a web design company dismisses any of your questions regarding their design process, pricing, or client references, take your business elsewhere! Good luck with designing your own website and building your website for online!

George asks…
how to make my own free webpage ?
i want create my webpage because i want to see what will be outcome of having it.

webdesignerscotty answers:
Not a lot will come out of a free webpage. The search engines don’t pick them up well and most directories won’t allow you to list them. You would do well to pay a small price (about $10) a month to build your website.
But if you want a free one, sign up for a google account and they have a free webpage maker, for a free website. The key to a web site or even just a single web page is to get people there to see it. Without that they’ll never find you.

Making Money Online With Google Adsense And Free Blog Sites
One of the appeals of making money online is that it does not take a lot of money upfront. It still takes a lot of time, but money wise even if you pay for services and help, it is still much cheaper than running your traditional storefront busienss. However, you can actually do fairly well with little to no money spent using Google Adsense and various free blog sites.
The first thing to do is get approved by Google Adsense. This involves submitting your website for approval and most of the time you cannot use a free blog for this. You will need a nicely constructed self-hosted website to get approval.
One exception:
Blogger.com Blogs
Not long after Google bought Blogger.com, they made AdSense available to Blogger blog owners.
The big bonus of this is not only is it free, and not only do Google and Yahoo crawl the blogs quickly, but Google is fine with approving Blogger.com blogs for Adsense!
So if you’re looking to get started with AdSense and not spend much money, Blogger is a great way to get started.
Before I talk about how to setup a Blogger blog for AdSense, though, let me tell you what an RSS feed is and how it works. This is important for setting up your free blog.
An RSS feed is basically a list of all of the recent posts made to your blog.
People can use “RSS Aggregators” to keep up with new posts on your blog. Websites can also syndicate your posts by checking your feed for new articles and then reposting on their blog. This is one method of “auto-blogging” (blogging on auto pilot) to give blogs fresh content. It is a win win situation since the publisher can get “fresh” content on auto pilot while you get your posts syndicated. With Blogger blogs, RSS fees are built in so you do not need to do anything to get it to work.
First, figure out what topic the blog will focus on.
You can blog about products, create product reviews, or just blog about your hobbies. The main thing is to blog about something you enjoy and are passionate about because money won’t necessarily come rolling in right away. It is important to be consistent with your blogging. If money is coming in, that is a great motivator to keep blogging. If money is nto coming in, then it is your passion that will keep you with it until the money comes in. Brainstorm your skills and interests to determine what you would enjoy writing about. It’s important that you like to write about it, since you will have to do so to build up the blog!
Now you are ready to create your blog.
From the Blogger homepage click the “Create Your Blog Now” link and follow the step by step instructions. This is very straightforward and you will have the framework of your blog up and running in no time.
When you choose your blog URL, you can come up with a clever name as your brand. However, for marketing purposes, you can also choose “keywords” to be in yur URL. For example, if you’re creating a blog about dog training tips, then you could check to see if “dogtrainingtips.blogspot.com” is available, or some variant of it such as “myawesomedogtrainingtips.blogspot.com”. Having your keywords in your blog title will give you a boost in search engines.
From here, you also want to choose a template which suits your blog theme. Just think about readers that come to your blog and what they would be looking for and choose a theme that fits your blog, not one that distracts from it. You can always pick a plain one also just to get your blog up and running and then change it later. Changing your blog theme is as easy as clicking a few buttons. Once the blog is created, then click on the “Templates” tab and select one.
To further setup your blog, there are some various settings you can now set.
On the “Basic” settings tab, set your blog title to the keywords you want to show up for in the search engines. That will help you get ranked. So an example blog title would be “My Awesome Dog Training Tips”.
You can also give your description here as well. Include your keywords, but make it a “human friendly” blog description (this will also help you get your blog Adsense approved). An example would be: “Welcome to my blog! I am a dog lover and come from a family of dog lovers. In this blog I will give you my awesome dog training tips I have accumulated over the years”.
Not only will this help your blog more readable, but the RSS feed will show this description and help people choose your blog to syndicate or add to their RSS readers.
One very important setting is to set “Notify Weblogs” to “Yes”.
This is in the Publishing tab. You want to set the “Notify Weblogs” to “Yes” so that each time you create a new post, notifications are sent out to the Weblogs site (which in turn is crawled by many other spiders). This is an easy and automated way to let the internet at large now you have updated your blog.
Another setting is to accurately set your archiving to reflect how often you post
Set your archiving to daily if you post every day, or weekly if you only post every few days. And by the way, you should aim to post almost daily if you can. The more content, the more often search engines come, the better for traffic and Adsense clicks and thus revenue.
Here is a very important tip about the site feed: Use the short feed.
By using the short feed, only a summary or description is shown in your RSS feed. If people want to read more, they need to come to your site. If they come to your site, they may click on an Adsense ad. For this reason you want to make your blog titles compelling and your post description compelling as well. Also the first 50 words or so will be seen so these need to be your hooks to get readers to your blog.
And now: Google Adsense
After you have a few posts set up, you can click on the “AdSense” link and apply for one straight from the blog instead of having to go to Google.com to apply. YES! This is very convenient!
From there it’s just a matter of pasting the Adsense code into your blog and Voila! You now have a monetized Google Adsense blog on a free blog out there that can make you money!
